I am Emily Kalina and I love to play the game of softball because it is a team sport. Watching my teammates succeed and get better over the years is one of my favorite parts about softball. I have been playing softball for nine years and this sport is in my blood. I love the adrenaline and excitement of the game and also the memories I’ve made with my teammates. I also love the family bond that is created with my teammates and coaching staff.
I was born to play the game of softball. I am a player every coach dreams of having. I am fast, smart, and agile when it comes to fielding and base running. In the box, I have the ability to swing right-handed, left-handed, and I have the capability of slapping as well. Bunting is another one of my many strengths. My main position is center field, but I am also a left-handed pitcher.
I taught myself to pitch starting in 7th grade when I wasn’t given an opportunity to try in my younger years due to my teammates needing my speed in center field. Due to a teammate's injury during my freshman varsity season, I was finally able to get a chance to pitch. After one game, the opposing team’s pitching coach approached me and instructed me to continue my pitching efforts because lefty pitchers are rare and valuable. Ever since that game, I have worked incredibly hard to improve my pitching skills. With my hard work and dedication, I am now fulfilling the role of the backup pitcher.
Finally and most importantly, I am dedicated to this sport and my academics beyond measure. Almost every weekend in the summer I have a ball in my hand. In the winter, I am going to as many camps and softball open gyms as I can as well as weight training. In school, I always try my hardest to keep my grades above a B+ and to make the honor roll all while continuing to be a three-sport athlete participating in volleyball, basketball, and softball and being involved in multiple organizations.
My dreams and goals would be to play softball as long as possible, to find the perfect softball family, and to attend a college that will fit my needs academically all while allowing me to have an amazing college experience.
