Personal Statement

"Ball is life," is one of my favorite personal quotes as it pertains to my life to a T.  I can't seem to go a week without playing or at least training to improve my skills. I started playing in 4th grade thinking it was just for fun and I wouldn't be any good at it since I was one of the heavier kids at the time. Time passed and I started playing AAU basketball with different clubs trying to find my right fit.  During junior high, I started taking it more serious and became more diligent about my training with my dad's help.  My hard work started to pay off as I was selected to start on my high school varsity team as a Freshman. Entering Terra Nova High School, nobody really knew me, but as basketball season approached things started to look up. I was second highest scorer of my team for the season. With all of my time dedicated to basketball, I manage to keep up with  my academics with a 3.6 GPA which I believe is the most essential part of being a student-athlete.

I dream about playing in a Division 1 college basketball team because I would like to experience what it is like to play with and against the top levels.  I am a very hard worker both on and off the court.  At this point in my basketball career, I have seen the top levels of play in NCAA viewing tournaments and camps. I know what to expect and keep a calm head during tough situations.  At the same time, I would like my basketball career to help me in getting to the profession that I desire, which is Marketing Management.

  • STRENGTHS: Rebounding, MidRange, Toughness WEAKNESS: Left Hand Pascua is a tough, class of 2018 wing player. She does a good job of getting clean up buckets around the rim and rebounding defensively. Where she needs to improve is her ball handling. Developing her left will really help her score more buckets at the rim in crowded scenarios around the basket and be able to make kick passes out to the perimeter. What was great to see was her short jumper just outside the lane, that really adds a dynamic element to her scoring. Overall, Pascua had a very nice weekend at the showcase and has a lot of tools that she can continue to develop.

Training

  • Jerome Jones
  • 2 years
  • Training is on going. Venus started working with Jerome on her guard skills during the summer 3 days a week. She had lost over 30 pounds during this period. And is still well on her way to getting to her ideal weight while keeping her strength intact.
  • Kawaan Summervillie
  • 3 years
  • Venus has been working with Kawann since her freshman year. Under Kawann's tutelage Venus has come to understand the deeper strategies involved with game to game planing for teams. This is going to be an on going process until she graduates from Terra Nova. Kawann's focus is on teaching Venus to be " versatile" .
  • Prime Basketball
  • 1 year
  • Coach Pocholo is Venus's strength and conditioning coach. This man has taken his precious time and knowledge, with a belief in helping a young women's "Dream" come to fruition. Some of Coach Pocholo's thought's are," Venus is a hard working, humble and dedicated athlete. But besides that, she picks up things well and is hardest on herself to perform at the highest level. With a throwback demeanor makes her an athlete who lets her play do the talking. Competitive with a burning passion, but calm with a well mannered character on the surface. My focus on Venus is functional training exercises to improve overall balance, body and mind development. We are working to improve her foot striking power along with the agility to amplify creativity using ladder drills, weight lifting and quick burst pylometrics to stimulate fast twitch muscle fiber development.

Additional Sports
