Personal Statement
I’ve been playing basketball since the fourth grade, but I only ever played casually. At the end of ninth grade, it became a goal of mine to work hard and prove my basketball skills and take basketball to the next level. I started training at GymRatz Performance Center. Every week I looked forward to going there and improving. It became what made everything else during the week worth it. At that point, I decided to work even harder and play college ball. Through playing basketball, I’ve learned that I am a visual learner and that I work best with a coach that is loving, but unrelenting.
In the 10th grade, I tried out for the varsity team. I was the only sophomore to make the team. Although this was great and I was super proud of myself, my friends at the time were upset and kind of mad at me. I had to overcome the unkindnesses and jealousies. Also, I was not the best player on the varsity team, so I was not playing all the time. I had to work very hard to get myself off the bench and onto the court.
My junior year, I switched to a different high school to have better basketball opportunities; play with better players, a school and coach that would support and encourage my athletic goals. I was finally a varsity starter AND I was chosen as a Sullivan County Democrat All-Star. I am a natural defender. One time, I guarded a girl who scored 32 points her previous game and when I guarded her, she only scored 8 points. I’m a great leader and communicator-especially on the court. I’m super vocal-always talking to my teammates. I may not be the most talented player on a team, but I am the most hard working. My hard work, causes my teammates to work harder too! I am still working hard to learn more and get better-I’m not done exploding into basketball yet!
