Hello! My name is Amia Hyman I am a coxswain, and my love for crew started at the beginning of my freshman year. Prior to that, I played basketball, which was the sport my whole family played. No matter what team I played on, I was always the point guard. I loved being the point guard because I was in charge of running the plays and keeping my team together on the court. Although I was a skilled player, I began to strongly dislike the sport, and wanted to search for "my thing". I've always been highly competitive and strived for leadership roles in anyway I could. So when my friend suggested that I tryout for crew, I thought, "why not?". From the first day I loved it. I started out as a rower, but later in the season weight started to become a more relevant aspect and my coach brought up the idea of me coxing. I was hesitant at first because I loved rowing, but from the second I sat in that coxswain seat I knew that I found my sport. The feeling of being in charge and in control of the boat was different from anything I had ever experienced. From that point on my love and dedication to this role has only gotten stronger.
From wrench tightening backstays before races, to yelling “hands on” to get ready to launch, there is something to enjoy and take pride in every part of this role. During my time in this position of the crew, comes experiences and valuable lessons that I've learned and intend on bringing with me to whatever college team I step onto. If there is anything I've learned from my position in this sport is the importance of communication, self confidence, integrity, and most important of all my voice. My voice is something this position has taught me to develop, be confident in, and own, on and off the water no matter what. This confidence has assisted me from the classroom to the boathouse. From the tone of my voice, to when and what it's used for, I've come to understand its value and importance not only as a coxswain, but as a student as well. One of the most imperative lessons I've had to learn is that it doesn't matter how I feel, how nervous I am, or scared I could be before a race, or in general. All that matters is the confidence and reassurance I exert out onto my crew on and off the water, and wherever I go. Whether my confidence is real or fake, no one can tell but me. Once I learned that, I developed genuine confidence within my voice and skills that became a solid foundation for me to perform on. This has helped me in many circumstances, whether its me giving a presentation in advanced classes in front of my peers, or getting my crew together and excited for a race. My confidence and my voice is something I will bring to any team I step onto.
Ultimately, I am hoping to gain an opportunity to attend a school that advances both my academic and athletic goals. Since I was little I always hoped to compete at a collegiate at a college that is not only competitive in my sport, but offers an effective education in whatever field I intend to lean into. At the place I am at now I not only strive for higher achievements as a coxswain, but also academically, and I will do whatever it takes to get there.
Thank you so much for reading about who I am and what I am preparing for. I await the pleasure of what the future holds for me!
