Have you ever played “Sockey”? I fell in love with “soccer” by playing 1v1s in the garage for hours with my “hockey” dad. My terrible hand-eye coordination could not use a hockey stick so I played soccer and his terrible touches could not kick a ball so he used a hockey stick. So “Sockey” was invented and we battled non-stop with a soccer ball, where I learned to beat his long reach with his stick and would meg him or five-hole, as he says.
I now have the joy of playing in the ECNL, constantly learning from high end talent and coaching. My strengths are as a playmaker with proper spin or speed on the ball to help make my teammates look great and as a lockdown defender to shut down a top player on the opposing team. However, my biggest strengths are my coachability, leadership, vision, character, and perseverance. When I first started playing, I was told that I was not good enough to be on the top team, whereas now I have been a starter for the last few years.
My next goal is to play soccer at the collegiate level, one of the most difficult competitions for a female athlete to even make it. Academically, I maintain the highest GPA while enrolled in the Legal Studies Academy at my high school and volunteer numerous hours to various charities in my community. In addition to residential soccer camps, I have attended residential academic college camps focusing on neuroscience, forensics, and biochemistry. I attended a diverse public middle school and had the opportunity to captain my school team and support teammates who do not have the means to play club level soccer. My coach complimented me on my character, leading by example, how I contributed to the community, and that she told her family about me and that she had never seen a travel soccer player do that before. Although I received multiple academic and athletic awards, my most proud moment was when the school announced my hard work after our last game and everyone in the school cheered. I want to attend a college that continues to push me athletically and academically. I strive to be one of the hardest working recruits you will find and make a positive impact to my community.
My name is Victoria Hannah #11 (co-inventor of “Sockey”) and I play for Beach FC (VA) in the ECNL, a smaller city club; and yes, in “Sockey”, red cards are given for pulling your opponents jersey over their head to fight.
