Personal Statement

Hi, I am Shelby Ebert, a sophomore at Washington Liberty High School. I started swimming for my summer swim team, Overlee when I was 10. Overlee is a D1 summer team and is super competitive, so I grew up with my older teammates working hard and pushing me to be my best. I am someone who works better with others and swimming was the first time I had tried a sport that was mainly a me vs. me mentality. Swimming has given me the chance to grow more on my own. When I started at Machine Swimming (a club team), I was worried about losing at an October open, but I remember after I had gained a bunch of time, I climbed out of the pool and the first thing I thought was: I'm going to push myself to the absolute max until I get better. Still today that's how I try to think, not just in swimming, but in all aspects of my life. There are definitely days where I feel slow and I wish I could be better, but I realized everyone wants to be better, so the way I'm going to get ahead is by showing up even on the days that I am tired.                                                                                                                                                                                                                          I hope to continue my swim career in college. I’m looking for a program that will be a good fit for me both athletically and academically. Through swimming, I was able to grow stronger both physically and mentally. With any sport, not seeing the results you want could affect your mindset drastically. From my years of swimming, I have come to understand that I'm not always going to see the results I want when I want them, but I often do when I push myself further. I believe I have what it takes to make an immediate impact on your program, and will provide the dedication and commitment to you that I have displayed throughout my career.
