I am Kennedy Jane (KJ) Nelson, a future graduate of the 2025 class at Spanish Fort High School. I began competitively playing volleyball in 6th grade and have played for club and school teams almost every year since. Although I did not make my middle school team in the 8th grade, I didn’t let this setback stop me. I insisted on continuing my journey with club volleyball and improved rather quickly. After that summer, I made the freshman volleyball team and later, made it to JV. From the beginning, my favorite aspects of volleyball are the friendships and memories that I’ve gained along the way. Being on a team taught me how to be friends and work alongside all types of people. I also became more comfortable with working with people I have never met before. I have learned that mental health and attitude play a large role in the game of volleyball so I continuously try and see the positive while also observing the negative and how I can improve. I can’t remember a time when volleyball wasn’t a part of my life and I can’t imagine a future without it. I never want to stop playing the game and I will always find a way for it to be a part of my life.
