Hello! My name is Amelie Lo Jacono and I am an aspiring college volleyball player.
My goals in life are not just to become the best player I can be, but to be the best person I can be. I have always tried my hardest to be the best example for myself and those around me. Growing up, I had a unique family situation that left me split between two (and eventually now three) homes. Going back and forth between these different households didn’t provide much consistency and so I had to take charge of my own life at an early age. This independence really pushed me to take responsibility for myself and for my future. It also gave me a deep understanding of how much effort it takes to achieve your goals.
I really want to pursue psychology and be a therapist or social worker. My friends and family have always confided in me and I have felt for a long time that helping others is what I was meant to do. I have consistently been looked to as a leader by my friends and on the teams that I have been a part of, and consider that to be one of my best qualities - I am able to influence team morale and keep attitudes lifted even during downswings.
It is my goal to be able to play volleyball while I pursue my future career. Volleyball has been a huge part of my life since I was 11 years old and has provided a place of stability for me. Once I realized this was something I enjoyed, I signed up for every volleyball opportunity that was available, including joining the small-town volleyball league with my dad, best friend, and her dad. That experience was probably one of my hardest volleyball seasons ever because my dad wanted me to be the best all-around player and so he pushed me really hard. As a result, I feel comfortable and am skilled in most positions, but it’s setting I love the most because I feel like it’s where my leadership skills shine.
Through every season of volleyball and in multiple stages of my life so far, I have faced challenges that put my love for volleyball and my perseverance to the test. In the end, I’m proud to say that I’m still here and I refuse to give up. It would be an honor to even be considered to play at the college level and feel confident that I would be an asset to not only the team’s ability to win but to the morale of the players.
