Personal Statement

My name is Shannon Phelan, and I am a 5'8 setter/right side. This coming year will be my 7th year playing club at a national level. I am number 13 on the court, and if you ever need help finding me, look for the poof of hair on the court. I love to challenge myself in all aspects of life, so even though my unweighted GPA is a 3.68, I have taken 14 AP classes and have a weighted GPA of 4.62. I am very proud of my ability to keep a level head and adapt on the court, and while I may not be the most exuberant volleyball player on the court, I have never not given 100% of myself, whether it be in practice or a game. I put my hands on every ball I can, going as far as setting from my knees if the situation calls for it. My greatest strength as a setter is my out of system setting. There is not a time during volleyball season when my knees aren't covered in bruises, and I am not afraid to slam on the ground at a full sprint as long it means getting the ball up. My teammates respect my presence on the court, and I am not afraid to adapt as the situation calls for with my hitters when setting. I welcome constructive criticism of my sets from both my coaches and the hitters on the court, and I make sure that I learn each of my hitter's preferences on their sets. As a hitter, I am great at getting a hit on the ball no matter how the set turns out and at being ready for whatever comes my way. I never give up and am not afraid to fight to prove myself when the situation calls for it. One of the greatest takeaways I have learned from volleyball and has allowed me to enjoy it is that the results are not as important as the process of getting to it. While it may be a bit cheesy, as long as the team plays well and plays with all they have, I will never be truly upset at a loss. I intend to major in biology and eventually attend med school to become a forensic pathologist.

NCSA COLLEGE RECRUITING®

NCSA College Recruiting® (NCSA) is the nation’s leading collegiate recruiting source for more than 500,000 student-athletes and 42,000 college coaches. By taking advantage of this extensive network, more than 92 percent of NCSA verified athletes play at the college level. The network is available to high school student-athletes around the country through valued relationships with the NFLPA, FBU, NFCA and SPIRE. Each year, NCSA educates over 4 million athletes and their parents about the recruiting process through resources on its website, presentations of the critically-acclaimed seminar College Recruiting Simplified, and with Athletes Wanted, the book written by NCSA founder Chris Krause.
