My name is Mason Nelson, and I am a senior at Tallassee High School in Tallassee, Alabama. I am a member of the varsity wrestling team and a team captain this year. My hopes for my future involve continuing my wrestling career in college. My wrestling journey began when I was 5 years old. Since my wrestling journey began, I have always been the smallest one in my weight class and often had to wrestle up a weight class in order to have competition. Due to being smaller, I had to learn how to wrestle technically and not on strength alone. As a freshman, I wrestled in the 113 lb. weight class weighing 95 pounds for most of the season. I wanted to wrestle varsity so I wrestled where there was an opening. During that season, I took some losses but won 2/3 of my matches. That season helped me be a better wrestler the next season where I placed 3rd in the state in the 113 lb. weight class. My junior season, I finally saw my hard work payoff when I won the state championship in the 106 weight class.
Setting goals for myself began when I was in first grade. My goals were to make all A's and to win my first youth state championship. Wrestling and academics have always been important to me over the years. Both have challenged me to work hard and to keep pushing to do my best. Over the years, I have learned many things from wrestling such as discipline, humility, determination, and what hard work means. Winning is always my goal but doing it with dignity and good sportmanship is a must, and as much as I do not like to lose, I also carry myself with dignity in those moments.
