  • Notes: Our 2022 17U Division Program COACHING STAFF TEAM MANAGER STEVE ALMONTE Steve Almonte will serve as Team Manager of the 2022 17U RIPTIDE team. While earning a degree in Recreation and Leisure Services at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, Steve helped lead the nationally-ranked baseball Tritons from ‘78-‘79 while also playing for the Y-D Red Sox in the Cape Cod League from ‘76-‘78. Steve has professional coaching experience in Utrecht, Holland and in every level of amateur baseball including Div. I, II, and III in College, as well as American Legion, Babe Ruth, and High School baseball. Steve is one the longest standing members of NEAAU Baseball since 1994 and has been a Team Manager every year since, covering every age division from 9-U to 18-U with numerous NEAAU Baseball championships. Steve primarily serves as the pitching and catching coach while also responsible for team defensive strategies and coaching third base on offense. His “old school” approach to pitching learned from Bob Shaw, Nolan Ryan and others dictates the importance of keeping the ball down, pitching inside, throwing secondary stuff from behind in the count while prioritizing a pitcher’s consistent pre-pitch routine and repeating delivery. This will be Steve’s twenty-ninth year of bringing his development, management, travel and tournament experience to the RIPTIDE program. HITTING AND INFIELD COACH BOBBY SANNICANDRO Professional hitting instructor Bobby Sannicandro will serve as hitting and infield coach for the 2022 17U RIPTIDE team as well as Steve’s bench coach. Coach Sannicandro is a dedicated baseball man who recently retired to Sagamore Beach ending a successful 40-year career as a high school history teacher and coach, now able to dedicate himself full-time to his first love-baseball. As a former player at Ashland High School and Framingham State College and former Head Coach of Marian High baseball for twelve years, Head Coach of Framingham State College for five years and Hitting/Infield Coach at Div. 1 Boston College for five years, Coach Sannicandro brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our program, especially to our offense. As a swing coach and hitting instructor, Bobby is a disciple of one of the most sought-after hitting coaches in the game of baseball, Reggie Smith and The Pure Swing. His methods are fundamentally sound as he focuses on balance, posture, maintaining connection, having the right approach for the situation, and stepping in the box with the right mindset. His “old school” emphasis of “get on, get him over, and get him in” still works in today’s data- filled world. Coach Bobby readily admits that hitting is difficult and that he doesn’t know everything, but his open line of communication relationship with his hitters helps the process and makes it more enjoyable, as well as his unparalleled love for the game of baseball. THIS COACHING TANDEM BRINGS A COMBINED SIXTY YEARS OF BASEBALL TEACHING EXPERIENCE TO THIS TEAM AND PROGRAM!!! November through March 17U ROUGH SCHEDULE Off-season Team Workouts take place every Saturday afternoon from 3:00 – 5:00 P.M. beginning November 13, 2021 and will continue until high school baseball begins, usually in mid-March. This time is spent conducting team workouts, private lessons, hitting drills and bullpen sessions, OnBaseU physical assessments, K-Motion kinematic sequence measurements, and pitching and hitting videotape analysis. April – late May Our 2022 17U RIPTIDE program will release our players to participate in their High School program during this time. We will return to work upon the completion of their High School baseball program, which could be anywhere from late May to the first week of June. June, July, August At the conclusion of high school baseball, which is usually the first week of June, our program will begin our summer practice, game and tournament schedule. PRACTICE We will typically practice three times/week on Tues. – Thurs. from 5:30 – 7:30 P.M.. This is where the value of the Riptide program lies. Players develop through game-speed repetition. Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect, and we practice in full uniform at game speed. We will occasionally mix in a weekday night game. GAMES AND LEAGUE PLAY Our 2022 Riptide 17U program will compete in the NEAAU Baseball 18U league. Additional games will be scheduled to occasionally play doubleheaders on both weekend days and a weekday night game. TOURNAMENT COMPETITION There are several quality tournaments for us to choose from in the MA/RI area. We will participate in two weekend tournaments during the summer of 2022 within driving distance in which hotel accommodations are not necessary. RIPTIDE CONNECT-THE-DOTS REPORT Included in the 2022 RIPTIDE 17U program is our one-of-a-kind Connect-the-Dots report. Collaborated by Strength and Fitness professional and OnBaseU certified trainer Tony Colesano, OnBaseU hitting and pitching certified instructor Steve Almonte and professional hitting instructor Bobby Sannicandro, every participant in the Riptide program will receive… 1. an OnBaseU physical assessment to determine strength, flexibility, mobility and stability in a variety of areas relative to baseball hitting and throwing. 2. a KMotion kinematic sequence measurement to determine how efficient power is transferred from the ground to the bat head and/or hand. 3. an OnBaseU videotape analysis of each pitcher’s delivery and each hitter’s swing as it pertains to inhibitors to power, accuracy, consistency, and health. 4. A detailed videotape analysis by Coach Bobby Sannicandro of each player’s swing at stance, negative move, toe touch, heel plant, contact, and extension. Each of the four processes will be conducted separately. A Connect-the-Dots conclusion will be derived from a collaboration between Tony, Bobby and Steve in a 25-35 page data-filled report.
