Personal Statement
Hello. My name is Cole Stumph. I'm a LHP/ INF and an upcoming 2024 Graduate of Hartfield Academy. I'm looking for the opportunity to attend a college that will challenge me to be my best on and off the baseball diamond. I've loved playing the game ever since I first stepped onto a field at 5 years old. Academics are also important to me. I am a 4.0 student and made a 26 on my ACT test at the beginning of my 10 grade year.
I pride myself in my ability to play 1st base but I think I will be able to contribute more at the next level as a Starting Pitcher. When I was playing travel ball I always pitched the 1st elimination game. I loved being on the mound when it matter the most. My goal when pitching is to not give up a walk. I have thrown 87 but sit between 82 to 84. My pitching strategy is pitch with command and control first. I work of command more than I do velocity. I can throw 5 pitches for strikes. ( 4 seam fastball, 2 seam fastball, changeup, curveball and slider). My best two pitches are my 2 seamer and curveball. I can get lots of movement on both.
Hartfield Academy is a private school in Flowood MS. Hartfield plays in class 6A. Our division includes 2 nationally ranked teams in 2022. I play against several SEC D1 commits every game I'm on the mound. I started my 10th grade year as a bullpen pitcher but after several injuries to teammates I was moved to a starter after the 4th week of the season. By the end of the season I lead the team in innings pitched (58) and strikeouts (52) while only walking 23 batters . Much of my success was due to pitching low and inside on batters. My ground ball percentage was 64%.
I'm also a tight end / defensive end / special teams player on the Hartfield football team. Last year we were State Champion runners up. This summer I am committed to conditioning and working to get stronger and more agile. The football workouts have definitely helped my legs get stronger for pitching. My biggest improvements pitching have come with my improved strength and agility.
I have a twin brother Sam that also loves the game baseball. He is my favorite catcher. I also have an older sister that goes to Ole Miss. My parents Brian and Paige have been married for 23 years. My dad is the operations manager for a highway contractor in South Carolina and my mother works in retail. I am active in my youth group at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. I routinely volunteer and am an avid disc golfer. I also was recruited by the church softball team to play short stop and hit bombs. I'm a premier left handed softball short stop.
