Established in 1991, the Chowder Cup provides a great opportunity for players to be seen by junior teams, prep schools, and colleges from all across the United States and Canada.

Current Committed Coaches: Darren Hersh Founder, President Goalie Academy of VA and Former Asst Coach Reading Royals Doug Michals Founder, Goalie Coach Lawrence Academy ISL, and former Head coach Franklin Pierce University, and goalie coach Brown Bret Abel Assistant Coach River School ISL, and former Professional and Draft of Edmonton Oilers Joe Palmer current Assistant Coach of the Syracuse Crunch (AHL), former director of Hockey Operations of Cornell The Goalie Academy Elite Camp has been attended by current and former NCAA D-I goalies, both male and female. Michael Lackey (Providence), Sarah Bryant (Providence), Kris Carlson (Alaska-Anchorage), Jay Williams (Miami-Ohio) to name just a few. Nick Ellis went on to the NHL's Edmonton Oilers after a great college career at Providence. Kelsie Fralick played for the NWHL's Boston Pride winning the first ever Riopel Cup and Sarah Bryant followed with another NWHL Championship for the New York Riveters last season.

Each of the past four seasons have featured players participating from more than 25 different states and nine different countries (USA, Canada, Russia, Germany, Finland, Norway, Latvia, Hungary, Sweden).

2020 PVAHA Player Development Tryouts

The 2020 PVAHA Player Development Tryouts will be held at the Rockville Ice Arena in Rockville, MD from Friday, April 17 – Sunday, April 19, 2020. The “main camp” will be held Saturday and Sunday. All tryouts this year will be held at the Rockville Ice Arena. On Friday, April 17, 2020, the Affiliate will host an “invite only” tryout. For birth years 2003–2005, the Affiliate Player Development Tryouts are the first step to being selected for the USA Hockey National Player Development Camps. A player selected from the PVAHA Main Camp will then participate in the USA Hockey Southeastern District Player Development Tryouts held in May each year at the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, North Carolina, outside of Charlotte. Players chosen at this event move on to the national development camps.

Goalie Academy of Virginia

The Goalie Academy is a goalie specific training organization focused on preparing goalies to play at the highest levels. The GA, has a proven track record of producing the top goalies in the Mid-Atlantic area. Our goalies have gone on to play AHL, ECHL, CHL, NCAA D-I, NCAA D-III, USHL, NAHL, and New England Prep, not to mention the overwhelming number of AAA goalies that come to us for guidance on a regular basis. We have also had several goalies attend NHL training camps. Darren Hersh co-founded The Goalie Academy in 1996 after a successful hockey playing career that included an ECAC Championship and Playoff MVP Award with Bowdoin College in 1993 and a Central Hockey League Championship with Wichita Thunder in 1994. Hersh was the Goalie Coach for the Reading Royals, 2013 ECHL Kelly Cup Champions, from 2010-2014.
