Over the previous two years of playing varsity high school golf, I have seen that hard work and commitment has advantages in achieving personal goals both on and off the course. My parents and school environment helped me realize this. My parents are committed to their jobs and they do well because of their hard work. My district, and specifically my school, is academically and athletically rigorous. A common goal for students at my high school is to strive for perfection and accept nothing less. I have come to understand that achieving goals comes as the result of hard work and enduring pursuit of personal goals. Through my participation in competitive golf, I have learned that it is the work I do when nobody is watching that is the most important, insuring I am prepared when opportunities arise. Golf (even currently) teaches me patience and how to deal with setbacks, then to work through those setbacks with grace and perseverance.
While I still love playing high school golf, I am excited to see a new level of competition at the collegiate level. The thrill of a heightened level of focus and intensity in a sport that I have come to love fills me with anticipation and hope. Growing and evolving as a player beneath the guidance of a great coach is also exciting. I know it will be an additional two years of hard work, focus, dedication and sacrifice before I graduate from high school but I also hold onto the belief that the end result with be worth it if the opportunity to play and compete at the collegiate level is presented.
Growing up in such a competitive academic environment will prepare me for studies at the higher education level. To date, I have pushed myself in more challenging course, striving for not only good grades but the practical application of what I am learning. Although it is demanding, electing to take Advanced Placement courses has instilled discipline, organization and the need for prioritization in life. Additionally, being able to be involved with student life at college even beyond academics and athletics is a significant factor that will weigh heavily in my decision on where to apply to college and which institution is best suited to meet my desires. Something that is personally important to me is my time served with Student Council. I am aware that many students participate in Student Council in an effort to add to their appeal on college applications; however, I started serving on Student Council in seventh grade with a motivation to serve and help the students at school via the planning of activities, organizing charitable events and simply bringing students together. Given that I enjoy positive, social activities, Student Council afforded me the opportunity to make friends and be involved at/with my school. Fast forward to my sophomore year, I have now served on Student Council for four consecutive years. Upon reflection, Student Council has taught me more than I would ever have imagined. I have learned how to successfully communicate with other teenagers and adults to execute projects; serve others before serving myself; and sometimes stepping up when I did not expect that I had the talent or skills to do so.
I believe I have the work ethic and the characteristics you are looking for in a new golfer to join your team. My passion for the sport along with my commitment to academics as well as my engagement in student activities demonstrates the fact that I am a well-rounded student who recognizes the importance of each of those components of a student’s life.
