Personal Statement

My name is Makena Lloyd-Howe, I am a very driven, hardworking and competitive player that believes good work ethic not only applies to sports but to all areas of my life.   I strive to be a coachable player taking opportunities to learn and improve by working with many different coaches, trainers, teachers, and many other mentors.

I’m currently a Grade 11 student going in to George Elliot High School , and I play U18 Female Prep at Rink Hockey Academy Kelowna, wearing #19 this season. Please continue to read below as I have shared my goals for both present and future, my hockey strengths, and my values.

My goals:

  • 1) Play high level competitive hockey
  • 2) Continue to achieve high grades to put me on the honour roll
  • 3) Graduate with a Degree in Nursing > Bachelor in Science, specializing in Emergency Room Care
  • 4) To represent Canada in the Olympics
  • 5) Mentoring, learning from one another sharing knowledge and experience on and off the ice

Hockey Strengths:

  • 1) High level of hustle, battle and compete
  • 2) Hardworking down low in the DZ, puck battles and using my puck handling to get the puck up ice quickly
  • 3) Fast transitions from Defence to Offence to best support my team and the puck
  • 4) Strong sense of where to be open, support the offensive zone, smart forecheck, creating the best opportunity for myself and line mates
  • 5) I believe having a positive mindset on and off the ice is good for both myself and my team
  • 6) I love the game and I’m a teamplayer

Things I value:

  • 1) Family, without their encouragement and support I wouldn’t be the person or player I am
  • 2) The opportunity to work with different coaches and trainers from all levels, and hear their feedback
  • 3) The outdoor rink my dad built my brother and I every winter since I was 2, this started my love of the game
  • 4) Having a balance between sports, school and home
  • 5) The lifelong friends I have made through hockey and school, and the opportunity to meet more great people

Fun Facts About Me:

  • 1) Started skating when I was 2 years old
  • 2) I love playing soccer in the off season, and recently tried out for the tennis team.  Taking the opportunity to go outside of your comfort zone, can help grow you into a better athlete and person
  • 3) Competitive by nature
  • 4) In my free time I enjoy, ice fishing, fly fishing, ATV riding, camping, hanging out with my friends, spending time with my family
