As a multi-sport athlete, I have faced many challenges in my journey. However, there is always one obstacle that appears as a reoccurring theme. My experience has been that coaches in all the sports I play, lacrosse, basketball, and field hockey look at size first. That is what they can observe quickly and gain a first impression. I am not the largest player, so many assume that I won’t be the fiercest, most aggressive, or determined. However, they clearly do not know me. Every time I step onto the field or court, I am determined to improve, show what I am made of and advocate for myself. I listen, learn, and action any feedback that I am given.
For instance, during the club lacrosse season, I play as a defender. However, as a freshman at high school tryouts, it became clear that the coach preferred size on the defensive end. He communicated to me that he was concerned that my skills were varsity level, but not my size. I worked over the tryouts to demonstrate that I had the speed, agility, footwork and field IQ to enable me to play any position on the field. My goal was to display that I could compete with players twice my size and adjust to playing any position he saw me in. Leveraging my knowledge as a defender and working outside of practice on my attacking skills, I was able to land a position on varsity. In fact, I have started as a varsity attacker and midfielder several times in my freshman season. While I may never be the largest player on the field, what I can bring to a college team is my willingness to adjust to where I am needed and to support the team in their overall objective.
