Personal Statement

Aloha! My name is Shay Mokulehua and I'm currently a Junior at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Over the past six months, I have grown a strong passion for rowing as it's a way to connect to my team, the water, and a sport that I love and am eager to pursue at the collegiate level!

I have participated in outrigger canoe paddling for 4 years (a popular sport in Hawaii) and decided to try rowing since I wanted to continue to pursue a sport through college.  There is something incredibly exhilarating about being out on the water and working together as a team that pushes me to be a successful athlete.  I love the feeling of adrenaline that comes with racing competitively as a team on the water.

Over a short period of time, rowing has taught me many valuable lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and overcoming physical and mental obstacles.  As an athlete of Ikaika Hawaii Rowing, I have learned the importance of communication and trust when working with others to achieve a common goal.  I have also gained a strong work ethic and the ability to push through challenges and setbacks.

In addition to my athletic achievements, I am committed to academic excellence. I understand that being a college athlete requires a significant amount of time and effort, but I am confident in my ability to balance my academic and athletic commitments. I am eager to continue learning and growing both on and off the water.

Overall, I am excited about the opportunity to join a college rowing team and contribute to its success. I believe that my passion, dedication, and skills make me an excellent candidate for this opportunity, and I am eager to continue pursuing my love of rowing at the next level.
