I have been rowing since eighth grade and I can say with confidence that it has without a doubt shaped who I am as a person. Rowing has taught me how to be the pinnacle of dedication, collaboration, and perseverance. Whether it was the people on the team or simply being in the water, there would never be a day that I did not look forward to practice. I believe it is the teamwork aspect of rowing that has shaped me the most, however. Being the bow of almost every single lineup, I have learned how to not only be an effective leader, but an empathetic one as well. Rowing in the boat with the other girls allows me to relate to them on a level in which I also understand what they are struggling with, which allows me to understand group dynamics at a heightened level. My articulation and leadership skills that I have attained from my experience on the Speech and Debate team as well as the Mock Trial team allow me to effectively maneuver interpersonal conflicts through proper communication. Most of my experience has come from being a rower, specifically the bow seat in sculling boats, but I realize that it is leading the boats that truly makes me feel like I can be a valuable contributor to the team. While my time as a rower has been remarkable and valuable, I believe that as a coxswain, I will be able to maximize my potential outputs in a rowing team.
