My name is Jessica Matthew, and I am a from Sturgis, SD. I started playing soccer at the age of 3 in Longmont, Co. My family moved to SD when I was 6. As a 7th grader I tried out for the Sturgis high school soccer team. I was not selected, not even for the JV team. I knew in my heart I was good enough to play at the Varsity Level, but it crushed me. Rather than quitting, I found a club coach that inspired me to work harder than I ever had. He saw something in me that the High School Coach did not, and while as a 7th grader I should have been playing on the U14 Club team, he moved me up to play with the older girls on the U19 team. My skill level and understanding of the game improved more than I could have ever imagined. The following year, as an 8th grader, the same high school coach who cut me the year before invited me to play on the varsity team. I said no because I wanted to play with my club team. As freshman, I did play for that coach on the Varsity team, and was named the MVP and was selected to the All-Conference First Team in the Black Hills Conference. As a sophomore, I was a team captain, voted MVP, and was again selected for the All-Conference team. I helped lead my team to back to back conference championships. This experience taught me to never give up my dreams and to keep working hard despite setbacks.
I am looking to play soccer at the next level and obtain a college degree. My current plans are to obtain a degree in chemistry or biology and then go into the Veterinary Sciences, or obtain a degree in Sports Medicine. I am looking for a school that has a strong science program and strong soccer program. I am open to playing at almost any level, as long as the school can meet my academic standards and goals.
