Sydney Powers '20 Recruiting Profile

Hi, my name is Sydney Powers. Currently, I am a senior at Mahwah High School Class of 2020. I have played elite level soccer for almost all of my life. I always knew I was fast so I decided to run track freshman year of high school. When I started track, I instantly fell in love with running and hurdling. I earned a varsity letter as a freshman. I had done spring track my freshman year but during a 100mHH race, I had torn my ACL jumping over a hurdle. I had to get surgery in April 2017 and again in December 2017 due to complications of the first surgery.  As a result, I did not compete at all my sophomore year. Time off from the sport I loved was very difficult for me but it has, without a doubt, made me a stronger person. I have so much motivation that I put into my junior year winter and spring track seasons. I am very grateful to run again. My motivation makes me unique. I had to go through two years of strenuous physical therapy and conditioning to be where I am today. As a result of my hard work, I earned Second-Team All League for the 400m in the spring on May 3, 2019 and my times are better now than before surgery.  The work I put in builds by character. I am a team player and always make sure to cheer for my team. I aspire to be the best role model for my teammates.

Academics are very important to me and I have taken many AP classes throughout high school. I am a High Honor Roll student with consistent A's. I am in first decile and I hold officer positions in numerous clubs. I am in Science National Honor Society,  Spanish Honor Society, and National Honor Society.  For my SATs, I have scored in the top 5% nationally.  It is very important to have a balance between academics and athletics. I believe I am a strong candidate who possesses strong traits in both fields.
