I haven't told many people this and probably no one on my XC team actually knows why I run. I started running accidentally. In 7th grade, I had surgery for scoliosis that literally occurred almost overnight. I had my back fused from T4-T10 and was told not to participate in sport for 1 year.
I recovered extremely quickly from surgery-- I had surgery on a Monday and was back to school on Friday. One year was a long time not to participate in sports when I felt great. One of my first days back in gym class, my music teacher was filling in and we ran the mile- I kept up with the boys even though I had not done anything athletically for the months prior. Then I ran in a Turkey Trot and took 3rd for my age. I was finally able to participate in basketball and softball at that point, but I found that I just didn't enjoy it as much as I loved running.
My freshman year, I went out for Cross Country. I did well and made it to the State meet, but I had never run competitively up until my Freshman season, so I still had a lot to learn. I started training and saw significant improvements in my times my sophomore season. I broke the school record and then broke my new record 3 more times! I made it to the State meet for the second time and took 18th. I also made it to State in track for the 4x800, 1600, and 3200. I broke the school records in all of the events we took to State now breaking 4 school record in one year. This year I qualified for State for the 3rd season in a row and individually competed in Running Lane XC and PRed by breaking 18:40. I still have high hopes for the rest of this year in track. I continue to love to run and can’t wait for what is to come through the rest of my high school years and college.
Outside of school, I have a herd of 7 Nigerian Dwarf goats. I had a business selling goat milk soap and doing goat yoga. I am also involved in Ozaukee Scholastic Shooting sports. In school, I participate in the Leo, Best Buddies, HOSA and FCA.
I am looking forward to running in college as the next step in becoming a life long competitive running athlete.
