Volleyball, a sport that I never knew I needed. My name is Riley O'Connor, class of 2024. I am a retired Junior Olympic Team Gymnast, who found my love and passion for volleyball my Freshman year of high school. While my main position is a Middle Hitter, I passionately contribute and play where my team needs me the most. Growing up, my Mom enrolled me in a variety of sports, as she felt and knew I would learn valuable lessons while building character by being a part of different teams. It was gymnastics though that truly helped shape me into the person I am today; from being self disciplined, self motivated, passionate, focused, and enthusiastic, to being coachable. I have faced many medical challenges, from heart conditions to joint hyper-mobility issues; which has made me a strong minded, resilient, adaptable, and determined individual. When the doctors told me that I would not be able to compete in certain sports and/or do certain things; that gave me the will to not only continue doing what I loved, but the extra drive to push through the emotional, mental, and physical limits. I set high standards for myself and through my consistent work ethic, staying focused and commitment to improve, I make my visions become a reality. I am a leader by example and understand the influence I have on my teammates as well as the impact they have on me. I believe I not only have the talent to compete for a college team, but the character and work ethic. Currently, as a National Honor Society member, and a three sport athlete; I know how to effectively balance multiple demands. I possess the unstoppable mindset needed to be a successful collegiate athlete on and off the court. As a retired Junior Olympic Gymnast, I also understand the importance of priorities and sacrifice as well as taking action instead of reacting under pressure. I am always looking to take myself and team to the next level by seeking ways to better myself so I can become the best volleyball player, teammate, student and person that I can be. I eagerly take on challenges as opportunities to learn and grow in all aspects of my life. My goal in college is to be a successful student-athlete, while pursing an education in the medical field because helping others is what I hold closest to my heart.
