The power of communication goes hand in hand with the strategy of the game. Which I have learned through my engagement in club, school, and beach volleyball. Communication with a team member is one of the most important connections in volleyball and gives that team a competitive edge. The more communication going on inside a team, the more strategic the members of that team can be. Allowing members to focus more on putting the ball away with less confusion inside the court. As the setter, I have a critical role in establishing the strategic plays that push a team to victory. Being the captain of my volleyball team has challenged me to develop stronger leadership skills which has proven rewarding. It has challenged me to grow strategically and relationally, while also improving my volleyball skills as a whole. The ability to help teammates deepen their understanding of the game has shaped me into a more nurturing teammate. Having the responsibility of fostering a good attitude for my team has shown me how important it is to bring energy to the gameplay. Being able to take what my coach is saying and directly infuse it into the game, is my favorite thing to do. As the captain, I have many jobs, but primarily I act as the team’s conduit between them and our coach. I ensure what coach is saying is understood by all members of the team. Eliciting the teams respect is a must, and setting their focus is incredibly important for a well-functioning team. This position has made me more proactive in my volleyball career by involving me in every aspect of gameplay, on the court and off.
