I’m a hard worker on and off the court. I love to read books, listen to podcasts, and push myself to my limits every day by working out (I’ve been especially working on my cardiovascular endurance because I’m at a high altitude of 7,320 feet here in Los Alamos). My goal for this gap year in 2021 was to learn what my interests are, how I could build effective habits to be successful in college and life and to get 1% better, day in and day out. By taking this gap year I have learned more about myself and what drives me (which is playing competitive college volleyball). What I have learned about myself is what my values are. Accountability is one of my values. I’ve held myself accountable by journaling my small wins and what I need to get better about doing the following day. Many of my other values can also be seen in my heroes. These include my Dad, Nicole Davis, and David Goggins. All of my heroes possess grit, mental toughness, belief in themselves, competitiveness, willingness to win, and accountability (which are all my personal values and what I put into practice every day in order to stay disciplined). Not only did I learn about my values and what my interests are, I have learned that business and sports psychology are two majors that I will be taking in the fall. I have read over 15 books about these 2 subjects over the past 6 months. I have also listened to countless podcasts including Dr. Michael Gervais (a high-performance sports psychologist), Victoria Garrick (former USC libero), and Tim Ferris (who has successful business leaders of the world on his podcast). All three of these podcasts have taught me a lot about the mental game of sports, what a successful business looks like and what the best of the best do to achieve greatness. I believe in order to be the best I have to learn from the best and that's exactly what I have done this past gap year. I hope to further my talents at a competitive college and showcase what I have learned.
