Hello! My name is Aurora Gutierrez-Macias (aka Skittles). I am currently 16 years old and a junior at Chapin High School in El Paso, Texas. I will graduate in 2022. My entire life has been shaped by a military family background (4 generations of military service to include uncles and sibling). My family has taught me about individual discipline along with team discipline in order to get the task done to be an effective student/athlete. I have learned through faith and my family background to be physically fit, mentally prepared, and emotionally grounded for all aspects of sports, academics, and my life.
In middle school I competed in five sports (cross-country, v-ball, soccer, basketball, and track) winning district medals for cross country and track. I was 12 years old my first-time playing volleyball. My only previous sports experience was one season of soccer at the age of 3. I felt a passion for team sports right away and I’ve been given the honor of the Captain role for over 6 seasons in multiple sports. I am currently a bi-sport athlete focusing on volleyball and soccer in my high school years. I have developed many training skills for the volleyball game by working on continuous cardio and strength conditioning; volleyball handling drills and consistency skills; and over-coming height challenges to be an asset to the team. I have played club volleyball for three years with a season of city volleyball. My roles have been all around player with an emphasis on the setter and defense specialists’ positions. For the past three summers I have attended volleyball clinics at several colleges to sharpen my skills. I have learned and overcome through my athleticism and knowledge skillful techniques for the volleyball game. I am a coachable individual willing to learn to improve as a player, person, and team member.
I am currently a player for a 17’s national club volleyball team and high school varsity team. I am using this COVID-19 deferral period as a time to overcome the inability to work on team building with innovative methods, concentrate on my physicality, and focus on my academic studies. I am continuing my studies online and have a 3.5 GPA to work towards my college academic goal in order to play volleyball at the next level. I am a JROTC student with many ribbons and medals pinned to my uniform for academic achievements, community volunteer projects, competition events, and athletic roles. I am aware I need to stay focused to work hard and I do that by having an optimistic, encouraging, and humorous personality.
By May 2022, I would like to make a smooth transition to a college which shares my personal values both academically and athletically with volleyball principles. I believe strongly I can be beneficial to any volleyball program.
