This year, I advocated for and was given the opportunity to initiate the girls wrestling team at my high school. As first-year wrestlers, we achieved an undefeated record in duels and secured top-five positions in several tournaments. Throughout the season, I reached several milestones that are not typically accomplished by first-year wrestlers in this sport. I earned third place in my district tournament, which qualified me for the state tournament. At state, I pushed myself to a 3-1 record in matches and secured third place in my weight class.
During the season, I noticed the lack of representation of African American girls, especially in my weight class of heavyweight. Observing this motivated me to continue wrestling and serve as an inspiration to young girls who resemble me and wish to pursue the sport. I am actively collaborating with my current high school to recruit more girls to the team and organize wrestling events. I aim to gain more wrestling knowledge, experience, and leadership skills by working closely with my current high school and college coaches, which will enable me to coach and potentially start my own club team for inner-city wrestlers like myself. Ultimately, I aspire to contribute to the growth and development of my current high school team and other inner-city schools.
