Personal Statement
My name is Hayden Lieb, I am a 16 year old Yup’ik Eskimo from the rural town of Bethel, Alaska. I am currently in the 11th grade with an overall GPA of 3.65. I am a student at Bethel Regional High School which has an enrollment of approximately 250 high school students. I was born and raised in Bethel where both my parents are school teachers and my father the head coach of our high school team and our club team. With a father as a wrestling coach I have been around the sport as long as I can remember, I began wrestling in our freestyle club at 4 years old.
Bethel is located off of the road system in bush Alaska which requires us to fly to competitions. Being a three-time state champion in Alaska is a great accomplishment; however, my family has made it possible for me to attend national tournaments in the Lower 48 allowing me to compete with some of the best. Through these travels I placed 6th in the NHSCA middle school division (127 lbs) in 2016, 5th in the Freshmen division (132 lbs) in 2017, and 5th in the Sophomore Division (145 lbs) in 2018. I was the 160 lb. runner-up in the 2018 Reno Tournament of Champions. In 2017 I was the US Open Cadet Freestyle champion in Las Vegas. My future plans are to compete at the collegiate level and earn a college degree.
Our plans this year are not only to compete here in Alaska but to compete in the Super 32 tournament , NHSCA national tournament, the US Open in Las Vegas and Fargo Nationals.
