Personal Statement

Ever since I started playing football in 3rd grade, the sport has had a big impact  on my life. I have learned so much through the sport, about teamwork and discipline, as well as building my character: I would not be the same person I am today if I had not played football.

In my first year at Newtown High School, I was selected as one of the captains of the freshman team and was named freshman offensive player of the year.  Following the season, I had the opportunity to compete for a varsity position despite a strong senior class. Through hours of training on the field and in the weight room, I was able to secure a starting spot on the varsity team as a cornerback my sophomore year. Throughout that season and the following offseason, I quickly developed my character and leadership skills. I learned values such as commitment, teamwork and coachability, as well as understanding how to motivate my teammates.

Before my junior season, I was named the first junior captain in program history. I took on this role and did my best to lead our team through the season. We finished the season 7-3, capped by an upset victory of our longtime rivals. In addition to working out with the team everyday, I see a private strength coach 3 times a week throughout the year to build both strength and speed. With this, I am able to see maximum results in my improvement as an athlete.

I work hard to be the best that I can be not only on the field but in the classroom as well. I hold myself to high academic standards and plan on continuing to do so through the rest of high school and college. I expect to finish high school in the top 5 percent of my class academically, and hope to lead my football team into our state playoffs. As for college, academics are the most important aspect of the school I would like to attend.  I would like to achieve the best education possible with a degree in science or engineering. Of course, I would also like to play football at the highest level my ability allows.
