Derek Gutowski '24 Recruiting Profile

Hello my name is Derek Gutowski and I am entering my junior year at Roxbury High School in NJ.  I am undecided as to what I plan to study in college.  I feel that being able to swim in college will bring a good balance between academics and athletics.  I believe that I would be a good candidate for a team because I see myself not just as a teammate but also as a role model.  Swimming for my high school  team has taught me that although I may not be entered in my favorite event, the coaches have entered me in events that will help the team, not just me as an individual.  I have learned leadership skills as part of a Tae Kwon Do Leadership team member instructing younger students, some with special needs as well as holding leadership positions in Boy Scouts.  I have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. It is here that I have also learned the value of teamwork as well as leading by example.  I have learned to mentor younger scouts and work with adult leaders. These other activities have helped me learn to budget my time while maintaining good grades.
