Personal Statement
I would be a desirable addition to both the academic and athletic community of the institution I will attend, as I have a combination of character, athletic ability, maturity, academic achievement, love of learning, and true concern for others.
My coach, a former top 150 ATP tour player, trained me each morning before and after school. His training focus has always been “keep your eye on the goal”. Tournaments were initially used for competition, and to train what was learned during practice, not necessarily to walk away with a medal. This was frustrating at times, starting tennis at 12 years old, playing against others who played differently, but would win 1st place. However, his goal was to create a player that became stronger, more competitive each month, and eventually win against these players. As the years progressed, I began winning matches and tournaments. I believe very strongly I have not come close to reaching my potential, as I see evidence of continued improvements.
At 6’4”, I use my height to my advantage, as serve and volley is an extremely strong and advantageous part of my offensive singles game. I have quick hands, which assists me at the net, so that I can take a defensive shot and turn it into an offensive shot. Additionally, my strong serve also bodes well for doubles play, as I continually set my partner up for a slam or slice. I am a strong, athletic, and well-rounded player. I would make a great addition to a collegiate team.
My dedication and determination is what sets me apart from others. I carry this on and off the court. I carry a 4.0 GPA, while taking every Advanced Placement class offered. As a junior, I was selected as one of 25 out of 486 in my class to be a part of the Junior Leadership Team, which contributes to the community and works on projects with city business leaders. In addition to training and my studies, I also work part-time at a country club tennis center. I assist with men’s’ league, run the pro-shop, help run tournaments, and I am also able to do what I love, which is help train the junior tennis players.
