Alexis Newby '16 Recruiting Profile

    “Student-athlete” is a label traditionally given to athletes, and I have chosen to embrace it over my 11 years of playing experience. I truly believe that “student” was placed first for a reason; therefore, I have made academics an integral part of my life. I attend Central Catholic High School, a college preparatory school, in Portland, OR, and have maintained a cumulative 4.05 GPA while taking honors courses. At the same time, athletics are a very important part of my life. I have always enjoyed working on becoming the best player I can be, and pride myself on having a profound work ethic.

    Playing college softball has been the ultimate goal ever since a young age. When I was little, all I wanted to do was put on metal cleats and be as cool as the girls I watched on TV. Now, I have realized that softball is something I could never dream of living without. The competitive atmosphere and ceaseless learning environment have always been key elements in my love for the game. I hope to find these two things in a college softball team, in addition to a positive, family-based environment. Heading into my college career, I want to improve as much as I can, and be given the opportunity to make an impact on the team.

    In general, I hope to attend a college or university that has a strong academic foundation, providing me with the opportunity to challenge myself intellectually and athletically at the next level. While I am still unsure about what I want to major in, I know I want to eventually give back to the game that has given me so much (i.e., coaching, athletic training). I am not worried about population or location, but it is very important to me that the school has a low student to faculty ratio.

    I am open to any and all opportunities, and would love to learn more about you and your program. I look forward to finding a school strongly based in learning, a family environment, and competitive spirit — both on and off the field.
