Halfway to my second degree black belt, I was in a slump. I had spent 11 years of my life in taekwondo and by the age of 14, I was ready for a change. The best part of taekwondo was the support and teamwork, and yes, the rush and triumph of mastering the skills and testing alongside my peers who had been training with me since I was a child. We cheered each other’s achievements. We earned places on the leadership team, emulating our seniors on how to teach and motivate younger students striving for their black belts. When I left the dojang and entered the world of volleyball, I felt at home surrounded by teamwork, persistence, and leadership displayed by all of my teammates. I love the competition. I tell my team, “We can do it! One good receive!” These factors gave me all the reasons to dedicate the rest of my life to a new sport where I hope to advance for another 11 years and more.
Every free moment, I look forward to playing volleyball. I spend extra time outside of practice with my varsity and JV teammates to help them learn and practice skill sets. I have played 6-2 and 5-1 rotations in three years of varsity and club volleyball. In college, I plan to balance my passion for art and science with volleyball. I intend to pursue a career in medical illustration.
