Personal Statement

I am a 6'0, 205 lb Freshman quarterback from Missouri. I have many blessings in my life. I have three great brothers and sisters, my mother and father just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary, and we have always enjoyed the sport of football together. My first game as a freshman quarterback I was 17/17 in the first half which prompted the varsity coaches to give me a wonderful opportunity and bring me up to our 5A varsity team. This is the first time in our school's history that a freshman in a skilled position played at the varsity level. I knew as a freshman, the varsity players and team leaders needed to see me work to gain their respect. I was able to develop relationships by working extremely hard, and by making plays that helped our team win. I was brought in as quarterback against Nixa, our main rival in, "The Backyard Brawl", and threw the winning touchdown pass in overtime. That game secured our spot as district champions. It was a wonderful privilege to be given the chance to play varsity as a freshman, and I felt like I belonged. One thing that makes me unique as a quarterback is that I'm a multiple time youth wrestling state champion. As a freshman, I placed 3rd at state at the 189lb weight class. I was the only freshman to even make it to state at that weight class. Some might think, with my wrestling background, that I would be better suited on defense as a linebacker. As seen on my video, I had success as a linebacker, but my throwing accuracy and running ability have allowed me to be an even more successful quarterback. Players think that being given the position of quarterback automatically makes one a leader, but I have learned by watching my father and older brother, that a position does not make a leader. Leadership must be earned. I've seen in watching my father as a football coach, and my brother as a college athlete that success is the natural by-product of hard work, skill development, and correct thinking. I always remind myself during practice that there are other quarterbacks around the country preparing to play against my team. I try to make sure, every single day that I am thinking better, and working harder than anyone else, both on and off the football field. As a quarterback, I bring an unwavering desire to win to the team, but I am not satisfied with just winning. I strive for excellence in everything I do. You can win a game sometimes, and still not be excellent, but we should play and live with excellence because it is the best way to live. I believe if you strive for excellence, the winning will come. I presently have a 4.0 in school and plan on remaining excellent in the area of academics. I am also continuing to grow myself as a leader and am currently studying The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, by John Maxwell. In choosing a school, what matters most to me is the coaching staff. I want to be around men of honor, who know how to win. I want to be a coach myself someday, and plan on pursuing a communications degree. With God's help, and lots of hard work, I believe I will be able to play football at the Division I level.
