Personal Statement

My father is my best friend, my role model. Everything my father did, I wanted to do. Whether it was wearing the same clothes or eating the same foods, I wanted to be just like him. Golfing, just as my father did, was no exception. I began my journey with golf by joining my father on the range. He would let me hit a few balls using his clubs. The fact that I got him to take me to the place where he spent most of his time, felt like an accomplishment. I had no idea what was yet to come. The game of golf led me to the realization that committing oneself in perfecting something can turn into a humbling and fulfilling venture. I knew since day one when I picked up my seven iron, that golf was the game for me. It was frustrating, I wanted to quit at times, but I realized that with hard work and dedication I could someday make it to where I wanted to be. My freshman year of high school, I tried out for the school team and made Varsity. I was humbled by my teammates and by not only our wins but also our losses. Losing made me more determined than ever to lower my score. Since the beginning of my high school golf career I have competed in many competitive tournaments. In the end, I realized that lost tournaments were not losses, but rather learning experiences. Michael Jordan says it perfectly: “I have lost over and over again, and that is why I succeed.” Learning from my losses led me to succeed in In all, whether it is a round of mini golf on vacation, or the Virginia Amateur, I am one hundred and ten percent committed to shooting the lowest score. I am extremely committed in pursuing my dreams in golf and strive to be the best I can be. Golf has taught me a work ethic few people my age have yet to develop. It has taught me persistence and shown me what hard work, perseverance and fortitude can achieve. I have also been able to form camaraderie with my fellow players. I have learned to manage my time and prioritize my commitments on and off the course. This has been an ongoing process that I hope to continue and further develop in my future endeavors. Nothing in the world gives me more joy and fulfillment than golf. There is only one thing on my mind while I am playing: being the best I can be. Each day I strive to be better than I was the day before. Golf is not only a sport to me, it is a lifestyle.
