What the Coaches are Saying...

“The United States Merchant Marine Academy United States Merchant Marine Academy is a federal service academy that educates and graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers of exemplary character who serve America’s marine transportation and defense needs in peace and war. With 95 percent of the world's products transported over water, these leaders are vital to the effective operation of our merchant fleet for both commercial and military transport during war and peace. Academy graduates abide by the motto “Acta Non Verba" - deeds not words, and are leaders that exemplify the concept of service above self. Known for its rigorous academic program, USMMA requires more credit hours for a baccalaureate degree than any other Federal service academy. This challenging coursework is augmented by the Academy’s Sea year experience, which affords midshipmen the opportunity to acquire hands-on, real-world experiences aboard working commercial vessels sailing to ports around the world. Midshipmen who master this demanding curriculum earn a unique combination of credentials: •A highly-regarded Bachelor of Science degree •A U.S. Coast Guard license •An officer’s commission in the U.S. Armed Forces Although tuition is free( A $200,000 savings) graduates have a service obligation upon graduation that provides the most career options offered by any of the federal academy. •Graduates can choose to work five years in the United States maritime industry with eight years of service as an officer in any reserve unit of the armed forces. •Or five years active duty in any of the nation’s armed forces.”

“I hope this letter finds you well. I wanted to reach out to you regarding any interest you may have in The United States Merchant Marine Academy (NY). First and foremost, you must meet our academic standards and be able to contribute to a high quality Division III Football program. If you are unfamiliar with us, we are one of Five Federal Service Academies (Navy, Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard). Similar to the other Academies, our Midshipmen do not pay for their education (valued at $240,000), but unlike the other academies, our graduates do not have an active duty military requirement. Our graduates (75%) go into the commercial shipping industry (5-year commitment) and have starting salaries of $80,000-$100,000 a year. You will also be required to Commission as 2nd Lieutenants in the United States Naval Reserve and do a two-week stint for eight years while you fulfill your maritime commitment. If you prefer, our Midshipmen (25%) are able to Commission as Officers in any branch of the military: Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force or Coast Guard. Academically, we need the best of the best! Our Standardized test requirements are hard minimums, so as Juniors you need to be close to these minimums and be in high level (AP/IB/Honors) classes: · SAT- MATH- 580, Critical Reading- 520 · ACT- MATH- 24, ENGLISH- 22 o ONLY NEED TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS IN EITHER THE SAT OR ACT, THEY WILL TAKE THE BEST OF THE TWO. · CLASS RANK- TOP 30% · GOOD GRADES IN ALL MATH AND SCIENCE (Calculus/Chemistry/Physics any AP/Honors courses help) In addition, leadership in extracurricular activities look favorable on their applications. If the information provided in appeals to you, please take the time to complete our questionnaire.”
