    What the Coaches are Saying...
    Jun 13, 2019

“An Assistant Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, Dr. Joel Cormier enters his second season as Head Coach of the EKU Colonels Club Hockey team. A three-time provincial champion ice hockey coach in Canada, Cormier is a holder of the Canadian Hockey Association Advanced I Coaching Certificate and a Masters Degree in Coaching Studies from Central Michigan University. While pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of New Mexico, Cormier guided the UNM Ice Wolves in 2006 to an 18-6-2 record and a Southwest Showdown Tournament Championship in Dallas, Texas. Prior to UNM, Cormier won provincial and Atlantic regional championships with the Pownal Midget AAA Red Devils in 2004, a Queen City League Championship with the Regina Bantam AA Hawks in 2002, League and Provincial Championships with the Notre Dame Bantam AA Hounds in 1999, and a provincial championship leading to an appearance in the Air Canada Cup Midget Championships with the Charlottetown Midget AAA Abbies in 1997. He has also coached in the Central Junior A Hockey League in Canada and Men’s and Women’s NCAA Division III tennis at Nichols College. Without recruiting, Dr. Cormier took the EKU Colonels form an 0-20 record to 5-13-2 and in his first season. The Colonels attracted several great players this year out of the Nashville Jr. Predators program. While Colonels hockey isn't a NCAA varsity team, it would be hard pressed to find a club program as embedded within the University as the Colonels hockey program program. The team trains off-ice in the same building right next to the 2-time National Champion FCS Football team with full access to the trainers and strength and conditioning coaches. With Dr. Cormier's New York City experience, sport management students often promote and market the team so that when the team plays off-campus, you can expect a top notch fan following with the best and loudest fans you will ever play in front of.
