What the Coaches are Saying...
Sep 11, 2018

“We seek out committed student-athletes, regardless of current performance, who intend to work to improve. And that's a challenge honestly for some. We're a Junior College in Pre's hometown 2 hours from Hayward (contact me if you don't know what I'm referencing there), and so we're open-enrolling. Anyone can attend. We have tons of goofing off, but XC practice isn't a jog to McDonalds for an icecream as many of us loved in middle school. We practice 14 times a week and follow vVO2max protocols, track everything, and expect student-athletes to learn the fundamentals of endurance training, restoration and recovery, and strength and mobility in order to successfully transfer into NAIA or NCAA programs. We want people that are passionate about learning or at least passionate about searching the college for that specific goal. We don't have a degree in XC or Track & Field. Tell me your degree intention before your PRs. Let me know what you are after in more detail, and I’ll happily and honestly share with you if that’s us. I’m starting my 14th, tenured year at SWOCC. This is my 4th (and hopefully last, Ha!) college. My work outside of coaching involves Advising, College Success, Study Skills, and support reading, writing, and math work. In high school, you’d call me a Guidance or Homeroom teacher. Helping to guide students successfully through the first few college years and into a profession or onto more university is what should really sell us. The NWAC is competitive centered on Track Town USA and Nike. Funding options in the NWAC are limited to tuition meaning about $700 to a maximum of $4200. Student-athletes cannot earn a "scholarship" to attend classes, live here, and eat here for "free." When you find that program, share it with me please because I look for them for a living. Obviously the total cost of attendance for students living with family, commuting daily, and attending college locally would be different than moving to Pre's hometown next to the ocean and living in Residence with us. Financially, we're very competitive to any college or university in Oregon. Pell Grants, local scholarships, Oregon Promise, and potential Athletics funding combine to make attending financially possible for most people. You can get there from here. I won't do it for you but will help.”
