My name is Josh Arm; I’m a 5’11” 150-pound senior (Class of 2019) at San Dieguito Academy (SDA) High School in Encinitas, California. I have been playing baseball since I was four years old, and still get the same joy every time I step onto the field to compete.
I aspire to be that collegiate player that quickly earns the confidence of coaches and teammates both on the field and off. I am driven to continue improving – I bring a serious commitment to every practice and have a daily training regimen dedicated to increasing my power and quickness. I consider defense and speed to be my strongest tools, and since I started high school I have focused on my natural position: centerfield. I enjoy nothing more than robbing my opponent of an extra-base hit – unless it’s causing havoc on the base paths. I also have an innate sense of the game, and I’ve had several coaches tell me I’m one of the smartest players on the field.
I’ve had to work very hard over the years to achieve the success I’ve had on the field. In 2016, as a freshman I was honored when my SDA teammates voted me MVP, after leading the team in batting average, on base percentage, stolen bases, and fielding percentage. In 2017, as a sophomore I started the season on JV and was again among the team leaders in those same categories, and was voted Defensive Player of the Year. About two thirds of the way through the season I was called up to become the starting centerfielder on the varsity team. Last season I was SDA's starting varsity centerfielder, and again led the team in batting average, on base percentage, stolen bases (tying the school's season record), and fielding percentage. I also had the opportunity to face a number of D1-committed pitchers, and hit 0417 against them.
What sets me apart from other recruits is my drive to learn and excel in whatever I do. I take pride in challenging myself academically and currently have achieved a 4.06 GPA. I am proud that SDA’s varsity team was named as the highest academically achieving baseball team in San Diego county this spring. My academic interests range from architecture and interior design, to natural sciences like astronomy and geology, to kinesiology and exercise science, to sports management. Non-baseball activities that interest me include photography, art, and American Sign Language (ASL). I’ve gotten involved in the photography club at school, and had some of my photos exhibited for the past few years at the San Diego County Fair. I’ve also completed four years of ASL and have been a member of my school’s ASL National Honor Society.
I’ve always been one of the youngest players on my teams, but I have succeeded in a very competitive baseball region, and have developed a great degree of mental toughness as a result. I have my priorities straight, and believe that I possess all the tools and commitment to positively contribute to the success of a collegiate team, regardless of division or location. I am looking for a college experience that will not only allow me to grow as a baseball player and leader, but also prepare me for life and provide an excellent education in my chosen area.
