My name is Jonathan Shupe, I am 6 foot tall and weigh 185 pounds. I have been playing baseball all my life, and love nothing more than to compete on the diamond. I started in the game as a middle infielder and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. After attending a scouting event, I was told by the scouts that with my speed I would be more projectable as an outfielder. At that point in my baseball career I had never stepped foot in the outfield. I had my reservations but quickly embraced their advice and began working out in the outfield. Since that time, I have grown to love the outfield (Yes, I still miss turning those double plays, but throwing a runner out at Third or Home is just as fun! I have experience playing both corner outfield positions but I now primarily play Centerfield.
I am a right-handed hitter and have always been a strong bat in the lineup. I use the whole outfield when necessary but am very effective in going the other way. I have always been a patient hitter with low strike outs and the ability to draw walks. I love to use my speed so hitting into the gaps and going for extra bases is what I absolutely love to do. I have been called a “power hitter” by some coaches which may be true, but I like to say I’m a “doubles hitter that accidentally hit the ball out”.
I am extremely motivated to play baseball in college. I currently attend a private high school which is known for both their academics as well as their athletics. I do not want any College or University to ever look at me and say that I did not completely challenge myself on the field or in the classroom. Even at my young age, I have had former professional players and college coaches tell me that I would be able to compete at a Division 1 level. Although these comments are encouraging, I know I must continue to work hard in the classroom and on the diamond to realize my dream.
As for college, I am looking for a program where I can continue to grow under experienced coaches while playing at a high-level baseball program. I am a very hard worker and am routinely the first one on the field and last one off it. I have a lot of fun playing the game but make no mistake, I am very serious on the field. I am an excellent teammate, very coachable and respect the game of baseball very much.
Thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement. As a member of the California Baseball Academy, I will be attending national events in California, Arizona, Georgia and Florida this upcoming year. If you are interested in meeting with me or just see me play, please follow me and I would be more than happy to provide you updated dates and locations I will be playing as I receive them.
Good luck in your upcoming season!
