Personal Statement
My name is Justin Flannery, I am 5'9'' 170 pounds. Baseball has always been a huge part of my life and I would love nothing more than to be able to compete with some of the best players in the country at the collegiate level. Throughout my baseball career I have mostly been a middle infielder and outfielder, but I always knew I could excel anywhere on the diamond, allowing myself to help my team win in anyway possible.
Speed has always been a large part of my game, whether it be on the base paths, turning double plays, or running down balls in the outfield. A coach once told me the game of baseball is a game of inches and seconds, and I have always made it my goal to be able to do everything quicker and faster then everyone else on the diamond. In addition, I work really hard to achieve my goals. My freshman year I went from a freshman nobody knew who rode the bench to an everyday starter towards the top of the lineup. By the end of freshman year I made a name for myself within the program and won the coach's award for the freshman team. Then in my Sophomore year I was named MVP of the Junior Varsity team.
Outside of baseball I was previously in the band program. Within the band program I was the drum major for two years, which is the most prestigious leadership positions a student in the band can have. In addition, I started this role as a sophomore, which many students aren't able to do until their senior year. Although I have now moved on to focus on Baseball, I believe being in charge of 150 plus band and color guard students has significantly boosted my leadership skills. This experience has also helped me on the baseball field as having leadership qualities is important for a shortstop.
Inside the classroom I take my grades very seriously. I have attained a 4.2 GPA (4.0 unweighted) throughout my academic career and I am striving to keep that going. I am currently seeking my International Baccalaureate diploma and am also taking AP courses which will continue to boost my GPA past a 4.2. In the future I want to go into either the business/management or aeronautical and astronautical engineering fields in college and I have been working really hard to earn that opportunity.
Thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement, I look forward to talking with you soon.
