July 2018I love the feeling of flying through the outfield grass to make a diving catch, knowing the batter is in disbelief as to what just happened. I love the feeling of the bat in my hands and the dirt on my jersey. Ever since I can remember, I have been in love with the game of baseball. My name is Michael Robinson and I would like you to consider me to be on your college baseball team starting in 2019.
Growing up in Oakland, California, one of the most diverse cities in the country, has had a profound influence on me. It has taught me to communicate and interact with people of every race, class, religion and gender, and my generous sociability sparks whatever team I am on. I am the social glue that leads my team to success. Baseball has taught me so much about myself. I am energetic, play with passion, and am willing to run through walls for my teammates (literally). It has also it has taught me modesty, as the sport is designed for you to fail 70% of the time if you are great. Another life lesson is that even if you work hard, not everything always goes your way, but when you get knocked down, you get up and work harder.
I had to face this after my sophomore year. Baseball did not love me that year. I was undersized at about 5’9” and 130 pounds, and had a terrible year at the plate. I knew I’d be starting my junior year in center field and would have to be better offensively if I wanted to really help the team. During the offseason, I went to the batting cages every morning before school and worked out three times a week. I put on 20 pounds, and the next season I was hitting around .330 until I got hurt. I am now fully healthy and hitting .350 in summer ball and am working to get even stronger for my next season.
As I move into my senior year, my academic goals are to continue taking rigorous classes like Calculus AB and AP Physics C. I like to challenge myself in all areas, and I always strive to be better. My goals for college are to go to a strong academic college and to obtain a degree in either Physics or Chemistry. But, who knows where life will take me? Wherever it does, I hope baseball is always a part of my life.
