I started playing baseball in a dried-out retention pond with a park district kindergarten camp. Mom didn’t believe in T-ball, “because you only tee up a ball for golf.” So, my first summer I tried throwing with a baseball mitt my grandfather gave me, hitting with a borrowed bat from the neighborhood kids and catching wild pitches thrown by my mom. The next season my dad took over my training. He taught me everything he knew about the game. My dad worked with me, teaching me to hold the ball properly, to pitch, to throw, hitting stance and follow through. He taught me to know where the ball was, to anticipate where the ball would be, where the next play would happen and the strategy of the game. My dad showed me how to develop myself independently as a player, to focus on the team goal and to lift other players up. My dad taught me persistence. My grandparents, friends and neighborhood families are all involved in baseball, it’s the glue that holds us together. Being a baseball player has given me a chance to learn and lead, to challenge myself and to be a part of a team that was committed to winning the local Charlie Alexander trophy. And, there is nothing that feels better than winning a series with your team. As a baseball player I bring a solid set of skills and self-commitment to the positions of catcher, 2nd baseman and center fielder to each game. As an individual, I bring focus, persistence and dedication to each game for my team.
