Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Geordan Kele Jackson-Murphy and I am a senior in the class of 2022. I currently attend Korean Kent Foreign School in Seoul, South Korea and I have a General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) from the UK which I was awarded in June 2020. My official GPA is 4.17 and my SAT score is 1420. I am a right-handed pitcher, and utility player, with the exception of being a catcher.
I was born in Fiji. My early childhood can be simply described as a highly active pacific island lifestyle, which I still cherish as a fond memory. Due to my dad’s career, my family moved to Dubai when I was age eight. I adapted to the city life effortlessly through various sports such as rugby, cricket, boxing, soccer, karate, athletics, and swimming. At age 11, I was introduced to baseball by one of my dad’s colleagues’ recommendations. I must admit that I didn’t know anything about the sport in the beginning. To prepare for the first baseball season, my dad and I would go to a nearby cricket field to play catch, hitting bottle caps, tennis balls, baseballs, and many other objects of different shapes and sizes to work on my ‘hand-eye coordination'. Then my first season of baseball commenced and that was it. I found my sport.
During my baseball career at Dubai Little League, from November 2014 to March 2020, I had many great opportunities, enriching my experiences at highly competitive games and meeting many good friends and coaches through various seasonal league games, regional tournaments, and international tournaments held in Dubai, Thailand, Kuwait, the Philippines, Singapore, and even a Little League World Series Qualifiers in Korea. The most memorable of all was the South East Asia Youth Baseball & Softball Tournament in Singapore in 2019 where I played in the 18U division for the Dubai team where I was awarded ‘Best Pitcher’ from the tournament. In addition, I have also played in the US for the WBS Colts in 2018 and 2019. I was part of the 18U and 16U teams, where we played games against highly competitive school teams/club teams in California, Oregon, and Washington, and even across the US from Los Angeles to New York.
In July 2020, my family decided to move to Seoul, Korea, where I currently reside with my mum and two younger sisters. The reason behind us moving was so that I could maximize my abilities in baseball, through access to professional baseball facilities and a higher level of competition. It was quite challenging at first when I had to adapt to the new curriculum (from British to American) and look for a team with limited choices and find coaches and organize training and so on. Even with the initial language barrier, I have still overcome all these issues and am enjoying my time here.
My current goal is to play baseball at the NCAA Divison, whilst also ensuring I receive a quality education. I do not want to limit my options, rather find the best college for me to enable to utilize my full potentials to be the best I can be. I am a student-athlete of high intelligence and athleticism who is ready to handle the rigor of a competitive college environment. After playing four years of college baseball, I am confident that I will be fully matured mentally and physically to be a professional baseball player.
I would like to be successful personally and professionally, not only to repay my family for their support and faith in me but also to motivate and inspire other student-athletes who are also taking an unconventional path to achieve their dreams. I strongly believe that if you have a good heart with an unmatched work ethic, you can achieve your dreams sooner or later.
I am thoroughly looking forward to the next chapter of my life.
