Personal Statement
Thank you for reading my profile. I am a college sophomore but with 4 years of eligibility. I currently attend Gettysburg College but was not affiliated with the baseball team 2021/2022 year. I suffered an injury prior to my HS senior year and was given 100% clearance to play just prior to fall 2021. I have been pain free since this clearance. Starting in Nov 2021 I created a daily schedule as if I was on a roster, doing strength work 6 days a week as well as baseball drills and scouting opposing players. But the most important thing is that for the 1st time I was able to work with a pitching coach on mechanics and understanding arm care from a pitchers perspective starting in early March. Prior to this I topped out at 84 and recently topped at 87, sitting 85/86, without losing any control.
Because I had a very late growth spurt I had to learn to do little things and exploit opponents weaknesses to succeed; such as controlling my fastball, late movement, changing speeds and pitching to contact. I know that the challenges I've faced over the past couple of years have made me more hungry and mentally tough. I won't quit and give up on my dream to be a collegiate athlete and expect that I can be a piece of the puzzle in competing for a conference title and ultimately a College World Series bid. I hope that having my Jr year wiped out due to Covid, my Sr year to injury and my setting up a plan independently to keep improving; shows my commitment, determination, resiliency and drive as a person and leads to the opportunity to show it on the field!
Prior to these challenges: I won my teams Varsity Defensive Player of the Year and also won the Tri-Valley League Sportsmanship award as a Sophomore. Throughout the years I have played/pitched in many final 4 and championship games; learning from both the wins & losses and building mental toughness. Prior to my injury Sr year, I was going to be the starting SS and possibly closer on a top 10 team in Massachusetts. Although I am very competitive, I want to help my teammates in any way possible to be better even if it is someone I am competing with for playing time so that the team can be as good as possible.
While baseball is my 1st love I know college is my main objective. My HS GPA was 4.3/4.0 GPA; taking AP Biology, AP History, and AP Statistics and many honors classes. I try to challenge myself in athletics, academics, socially and in my every day life to be better.
All my best - Charlie
