Hi, my name is Tommy Ng. I am a 5'11, 175lb switch hitting catcher from Francis Lewis High School in Queens, NY. This is going to be my 7th year playing organized baseball, but I have been playing for fun well before then having homerun derbies at the park and playing wiffle ball in my backyard. This is where I learned to become a switch hitter and I have been switch hitting for six years now. Surprisingly, I actually feel more comfortable from the left side even though I throw right handed. I have been a catcher all my life because I was always told I have a good arm, however, I will play any position that I am needed in with the same alacrity and intensity. I am currently developing my pitching skills for the upcoming season.
Being a catcher all my life, I learned to play the game with a reckless abandonment. I am always aggressive, but aggressively smart. I am never complacent until we have won the game. This attitude has allowed me to start every game for the varsity baseball team at my school since freshman year. In fact I am the only player on the team who has played at the varsity level for all four years. Each year, I have taken upon more responsibility, especially as the catcher. This only fuels me to be the best leader I can. I can be very condescending on others as well as myself at times almost to the point where I stop having fun. I try to lead by example even in practice by doing every drill at game speed and not wasting time. I try to get the most out of every repetition, focusing on doing it right and getting better and I am a very teachable player.
As a student, I am just as dedicated to my academics as I am to baseball, if not more. I understand that I am a student athlete and the student comes first. I would not be playing baseball if I could not maintain the grades I did and will continue to do. Baseball served as a motivator to stay in school and obtain the best grades I could so I would not fail off the team. I try to balance the two and find time for both of them because I know that it will be the same playing college baseball especially if they are paying for my tuition to do it. The competition in college both in the classroom and on the field will be tougher for sure, but I will not stop showcasing my leadership qualities anytime soon.
