Personal Statement

  • The definition sounds so simple: baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of nine players each, who take turns batting and fielding. But, how I love to be part of the game! When I was a little child, my parents enrolled me in differents activities. I have tried them all: gymnastics, basketball, swimming, dancing, piano, among others. One day, when I was 7 years old we passed by a a baseball field and I told my parents that I wanted to be on a baseball team. Four months later, I started practicing with the Marlins team in the 7-8 year old category. Once I participated in that first workout, in which I put a glove on my hand and made my first pitch, I knew that this was the sport I wanted to do for the rest of my life. At first it was a challenge, because in Puerto Rico the boys start playing baseball at the age of 3, so I had to train hard to gain a position on the team. I remember that summer I participated in a baseball camp with Coach Robinson Rivera. When I returned the next season I was a regular on the team. My hard work, dedication and commitment had paid off. As I grew older, I belonged to different baseball organizations, as third base and first base. At the age of 9, I started to study at Academia Santa Rosa de Lima in Bayamón, PR. I studied there until the eighth grade. In this school there was the opportunity to participate in different clubs, so I participated in the school basketball team, in the Athletic Association of Catholic Schools of PR (AAECA) winning the third place in 2014 in the shot of the bullet (tiro de pesa) and first place in 2015 in the launch of the javelin. Also, I served as an altar boy for a period of 4 years. During this time, I belonged to the junior high school honor society. In addition, I participated in different clubs and social work activities, such as Club 12, aimed at doing social work, and in the Youth Leadership Camp of Fundación Luis Miranda Casañas. In these activities I had the opportunity to help others through community service, which is something that I am also passionate about. Of course, I always combined these activities with baseball, standing out as a power hitter and in the infielder, on the first and third base. In 2015 I started studying at Puerto Rico Baseball Academy & High School, this school is specialized in Baseball, we practice the sport every day as an integral part of our development process. It is great to be able to study and improve the skills of the sport that I love so much in one same place. At school I participate in extracurricular activities such as the Health and Welfare Association, which I have been a part of since the ninth grade. Also, I am part of the Honor Roll of the Academy. In addition to playing and practicing at the school, I play with the organization Dux Gamers, an organization run by professional active players, who play AA in Puerto Rico and who reinforce perseverance, dedication, adaptability, teamwork and respect. These are some of the values I believe are essential to my success and they form part of my daily life in both my sports life and my academic life. In January of 2017, my coach of the PRBAHS, Mr. Omar Rosado, suggested I try the position of catcher. Since then, I am practicing this position with determination and practicing in the Dux Gamers team. My ultimate goal as an athlete is to be part of a College Baseball Team, as a catcher (primary position) player that also plays third and first base, I will support my college baseball team on every play, be a leader in the game and be able to help the team win
  • games! At the same time, I want to complete a successful university career and to represent my university proudly. During my personal, academic and sports development I have proven to be a dedicated, driven, committed and strong person. I know and love the game of baseball and I am good at making decisions, being respectful, responsible, disciplined and above all, I love learning and working as part of a team, that is what I have practiced all of my life and I am ready to do this at the university level.
