Personal Statement

Prospect Coach:

My name is Mason Green.  I am a 6’2” 185lb baseball player primarily LHP,  (secondary 1st Base) who came to love the game of baseball when I started playing at age 9.  Playing baseball has taught me how to navigate the ups and downs in life.  Life has many obstacles and how you handle each situation is extremely important.

At the age of 15 I started experiencing inflammation in my elbow.  Doctors prescribed Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation (RICE) for 6 weeks or until the pain stopped.  However, the pain kept coming back after each interval quickly and showed no sign of ceasing.  At the age of 16, I met with Dr. Bramhall (Texas A&M Team Dr) who immediately recommended and set-up a surgery (11/2/2020) to put in a screw in my elbow to stabilize the growth-plate.  After 6 months of rehab and strength & conditioning, I was able to start back on my journey of pitching again.

Since my surgery, I have increased my personal best from tournament to tournament, with latest below.

  • Tournament (07/01/2021)
    • FB
      • High 84
      • Range 81 - 84
    • CB 68
    • SL 72
    • CU 70

  • Rapsodo Session – Premier Bases of Texas, TX (10/06/2021)
    • FB
      • High 85.5
      • Range 81 – 85.5
      • CB 70
      • SL 73
      • CU 72

The surgery taught me to never give up on my goals until all avenues have been exhausted. Now, I am completely recovered with no discomfort in my elbow and am continuing my progression in velocity and consistency with my velo coach.

Baseball is not my main goal yet is an avenue of getting the best education I can possibly obtain.  My HS GPA 6.5/7.0; taking combination of Dual Credit, Ap and K/Honor Classes.  I have only taken non-certified PSAT test with high score of 1280 and will be taking the SAT in February 2022.  I have not decided what I am studying in college but leaning towards an Engineering and History Double Major.

My High School, Cy Woods is extremely competitive academically ranking #152 in the State of Texas, #2 in Cy-Fair District (12 High Schools).  The baseball team is also competitive making it the play-offs the past 4 years.  The combination of this competitiveness has taught me that hard work is the only way to success.  The Cy-Woods moto is 212o.  “Water is still liquid at 211o but with one degree of extra heat water boils, turns to gas and is able to power a locomotive”.

If you were to talk with my Coaches and my teammates, they would tell you that I am easy going until I take the mound, then I am able to concentrate and perform to the best of my ability for my Team to win.

  • Mason is a tall lean lefty with a high three-quarters delivery and a higher release height. He pairs a relatively high-spin (2100-2300 RPM) fastball with very high spin efficiency (95%-99%) that should play very well as velocity continues to increase. In a bullpen setting, he sat in the low 80's (81-84mph) while topping at 85.5mph. His spin rate (2100-2300 RPM) is close MLB averages (2300 RPM). With a projectable frame, his fastball velocity should continue to increase which will give a greater effect to the spin as well. He is registering roughly 26.5 Bauer Units (RPM/MPH) which projects to an above average spin at 90mph and elite spin at 95mph that would be top 10% in MLB. He pairs the fastball with a slow, true 12-6 curveball around 70mph with a spin direction near 6 o'clock and high efficiency (95%+). This should pair well with the fastball as the break (-20 VB) should provide large splits with the fastball (+18-22 VB) while maintaining spin deception. He throws a slider that is really more of a slurvy pitch (73mph, -5 VB, -2 HB) It doesn't have a ton of deception, but could be of more use against lefties as opposed to the curveball by getting something that moves across the plate more. The movement does match his natural arm action, so depending on how the fastball develops, it could end up being a useful pitch in HS ball. His change-up showcases extremely low spin (1100 RPM) and efficiency (70%) resulting in a VB under 10 and a speed (72mph) separation of 10mph from his fastball. If he can maintain the low velocity while the fastball increases, it could be very effective at any level. With the abnormal spin, its unlikely for hitters to be "fooled", but if the velocity separation can stay above 10mph - and even increase - the change of speed will be enough to really torment hitters when he is comboing the fastball and curve effectively.
