Personal Statement
As a student-athlete, I strive to succeed both on and off the field. I embrace challenges, work hard, lead by example, and never take any opportunities for granted by always exerting maximum effort.
I attend St. John’s School (SJS), which is ranked the #1 college preparatory school in Houston and is well known for its academic rigor. In my sophomore year, I obtained all A’s in high-level classes, which qualified me for High Honors.
As to co-curricular activities and community leadership roles, I was elected to serve as a Class 10 representative on the Student Affairs Council (Student Council) by my peers. In addition, I was selected by faculty representatives to serve as a leader of Bible Study and by the SJS admissions office to serve as a head of the Tour Guild Club (student ambassadors).
I am very active in community service and was awarded the 2020 Presidential Gold Medal for Community Service in connection with my serving 130+ hours as an intern at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Administration Medical Center with disabled veterans and as a volunteer student teacher for Vacation Bible Study with church youth. Currently, I have started a project called “Bases Beyond Borders” to procure and distribute baseball equipment for underprivileged youth ballplayers, both within and beyond the United States. I also work part-time washing cars to help pay for my baseball team fees, my pitching coach, and strength and conditioning trainer.
Like my childhood hero, Derek Jeter, the philosophy I try to live my life by is that “there may be people who have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.” I truly believe that a strong work ethic and persistence will lead to success in baseball and in life. I always aim to work harder than anyone else by doing that extra rep, staying late after practice, and by watching film to understand and internalize what I can do better in my next outing. I strive to maintain a continuous improvement mindset as an individual, and I try to motivate my teammates and others around me as well. I love the game of baseball, wear my uniform with great pride, and try to improve as a player and person each day.
