Baseball has been a part of my life since I was young. Working to improve helped to build character and overcome obstacles. Making the decision to leave my junior high team a year early to try out for the high school team as a freshman was difficult, but it definitely created an opportunity to build character. In order to earn playing time, I had to outwork older and stronger players. I also faced resentment from other freshman who had decided to stay and play junior high ball. Competing at the varsity level against opponents who were four years older than me required hard work and helped me learn to fight through adversity. I had to tune out opposing dugouts and focus only on myself and my performance. Once I was called on to pitch in a varsity game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the game tied and bases loaded, I faced the heart of the lineup. Even though it was an away game, I was able to keep my composure, focus on each pitch, and battle through a ten pitch at-bat to end the inning.
As a freshman joining a struggling high school team that lacked leadership from players, I learned to become an influential leader with the ability to work through adversity. Leadership involves more than being able to refocus after a bad at-bat or pitch. True leadership begins long before a player steps foot on the field. It is important to demonstrate commitment and sacrifice on the field, in the weight room, and in the classroom. I am always on time to class, practice, and all workouts, including our 6 A.M. morning sessions. I have never missed a game, practice, or workout, whether it was optional or required. As a starting varsity pitcher, I know that I have the ability to overcome any obstacle. I am looking to attend a college that will benefit me both athletically and academically. My goal is to earn a degree in engineering while playing a significant role in the baseball program. I have the talent, heart, leadership, and work ethic to positively impact any program. My attitude and effort in the weight room, classroom, and on the field will make a noticeable difference in any program.
