Hello, my name is Autumn Shahan and I fell in love with field hockey my freshmen year and want to play at the collegiate level. Without any formal training or experience, I went from freshman team goalie to earning a varsity letter three seasons in a row and two defensive MVP awards. I had the opportunity to play in Ireland, train with national team players and renowned coaches while growing closer with my team. These past three years I’ve taken on a leadership role within our program, by mentoring younger players, organizing senior speeches and gifts, and helping run our summer league games and practices.
Athletics have always played an important role in my life as I’ve played soccer, flag football, and ran track and field. As center back in soccer, I’ve been able to pick up on key defensive skills, such as the importance of communication, which I use with my team as a field hockey goalie. Sports have taught me so many valuable life lessons, such as hard work, time management, discipline, flexibility, respect, and trust, which I apply to all aspects of my life. Using my vantage point in goal, I’m able to encourage my teammates to be their best, while I continue to improve my level of play and remain coachable.
In college I hope to continue to be a student-athlete, which means my academics will remain my priority. During high school I’ve managed to play multiple sports, work several jobs, participate in various clubs and fundraising efforts, all while maintaining Honor Roll and a 4.5 weighted GPA as a junior. I attend the Charter School of Wilmington, which is ranked #39 for best high schools in the country, #65 for best STEM schools in the country, and we are recognized as the top school in the state of Delaware. I hope to pursue a degree in psychology or another field in which I can follow my passion for helping people.
